Let assistants and automations complete recurring tasks via the API
Use case & value More and more users connect Capacities to AI assistants (Claude via the official MCP server) or to automation tools. In my setup, the assistant reviews my day, notices from my notes that a routine is done (e.g. “submit timesheet”) and updates Capacities for me. Recurring tasks are exactly the routine work where this pays off most. Today they are the one kind of task the assistant cannot close.
Who else benefits
- Anyone using the official MCP server with Claude or another assistant
- Users who sync tasks from other tools (Jira, calendar, email) into Capacities
- Anyone building integrations for habits or routines (e.g. “done in the gym app → done in Capacities”)
Current limitation The public API rejects status changes on recurring tasks with: “Updating the status of a recurring task is not supported via the public API”.
Proposed behavior
- Setting status: done completes the current occurrence and creates the next one, just like the UI.
- The response returns the next occurrence (id and date).
- Optional: skip an occurrence without completing it.
