Mobile v2 improvements, use of space
Firstly, congratulations to the team on delivering the new mobile app design. I know (from brutal experience) how difficult it can be.
I have some concrete feedback for you that you may be interested in, especially this early after release when you've the best chance to make a few changes. The main point overall is that I do not find it to be an improvement in available writing space, if anything there is a loss of vertical space. Not only is this literally in pixels but also the visual feeling of being crowded due to floating, unanchored widgets. In detail:
- In text edit mode, when the keyboard is activate, the top of the screen (what would be called the app bar or toolbar in a regular app) is disused and blank. This is a misuse of crucial space.
- The calendar expand button takes up the space of an entire row and is likewise a misuse of valuable space. Think of how often this button will be used vs the affordance it offers.
- The alpha gradient "fade out" effect is not only outdated in terms of modern design, it also improperly reduces available space. It has been perhaps 7 or 8 years since this was in vogue and it is not preferred today not only because of fashion but for practical reasons. Secondarily, it has the visual effect of further crowding feeling and mismatching depth with the floating buttons. The visual language is confused.
- The floating buttons require padding and so take up space that flat, same/similar z-axis buttons don't need. This one is not critical but is another important aspect of space usage.
Again, I thank you for your efforts, I'm happy with the product in general. Hopefully this is of some use to you.
