1.60.1 - On click, images open as objects by default, not in full modal

Unfortunately with this version the way how an image opens in the modal when you click on it has changed, and not to the better. I don't understand why this has been done. Now when we click on an image, it opens in a modal with the image information pane open, so we have to manually click away that part in order to see the image using the whole modal.

You'd actually expect an image to open in a modal window or in full-screen mode when you click on the thumbnail, rather than as an image object with metadata that takes up half the modal window.

I still remember the first time I tried “Capacities” in 2025 and noticed this behavior—it bothered me right away. Then the behavior changed so that, in the default view, the image filled the modal window, and the image information could be displayed optionally. That’s actually what you’d expect when you click on an image: you want to view a larger version of the image, not immediately open the object itself along with all its metadata.

Fortunately, the system seems to at least remember the image's display mode state. Once the images notes pane is collapsed, the image opens as expected next time in full modal mode.

But as a consequence now I have to open every single image and click away the image info section so that next time I can open the image normally without seeing half the modal window filled with image object information.

That's pretty tedious. Please consider reverting to the previous behavior!

When it comes to images, it’s really just about the modal’s default behavior (properties pane expanded/collapsed).

In line with user expectations and the standard behavior of comparable PKM tools, the image should open at its largest possible size (full modal) and only optionally as an object with visible properties.

I think the team was so focused on the new media properties that they were given visual priority in the modal. I hope this changes again - it seems to still be a work in progress, since I currently don’t see any way to edit the options for “Categories” and “Colors.” Or maybe this will even be left to an AI?

Hi Beth, if it is intended, it is newly re-introduced in version 1.60.1. But why? This is definitely not the expected behavior if you click on an image. I can't think of any other PKM tool that behaves this way. Opening an image as an object is usually an option, but not the default setting.

This is intended, I'll recategorise this as an improvement request.

Perhaps it is possible to make this a setting that one can choose as a customization. Because in my case, I have the opposite need. I would rather have images always open with the metadata/note information open by default.
