Side panel - becomes useless when objects open in a modal (and no drag & drop between panels)

When I use the side panel together with queries, it loses its value because objects are opened in a modal by default (according to my setting). In addition, the side panel simulates a split‑screen / two‑window environment, but you cannot drag & drop objects between the main area and the side panel, which is what one would naturally expect.

1)

I open a query in the side panel (I’m not working in full-screen).

I click on an object in that query.

Since the object opens in the preview modal, which covers both the main area and the side panel, I can only work with this single modal window.

The side panel (with the query) and the main area are hidden and provide no benefit in that moment.

Practically, this feels similar to opening a new tab or overlay – the main advantage of the side panel (seeing and editing two things at once) is lost.

2)

The side panel visually suggests a two‑pane / split‑screen workflow.

But it is not possible to drag & drop objects from one panel to the other (e.g. from a query in the side panel into a collection or page in the main area, or vice versa).

In a split‑screen UI, I would expect to be able to move or copy items between the two panes via drag & drop.

Because this is not possible, the side panel is unfortunately doubly useless for my personal workflow:

I cannot really use it as a true second working area (due to the modal overlay), and

I cannot use it as a drag & drop workspace between two panes.

My suggestion:

Please add an option or a consistent behavior so that clicks on objects from the side panel (e.g. from queries) always open as a full page in the side panel (not as a modal), with a link to return to the previous view,

and add the possibility to move and copy objects from one panel to the other.

Hi Beth, Shift Click is the solution! Thank you so much!

Hi VisualNotes we're actually thinking about side panel improvements at the moment,

I don't think we'll change the behaviour of clicking, but shift click will always open in the side panel. So if there's something in the query results you want to review in the side panel, use shift click for this.

Drag and drop is on the horizon too.
