Feature Request: Enhance UX for "Object Select" Dropdown in Properties
Problem Description:
After systematically comparing the three methods for implementing dropdown menus in properties (Label, Tag, Object), I found that the "Object Select" option offers the best information association and querying capabilities. However, it currently suffers from two major usability issues that hinder its full potential.
Background & Comparative Analysis:
In organizing information, I thoroughly evaluated three dropdown implementation approaches:
- Label (Inward-facing): Offers color variety and quick setup but has the weakest association capabilities and cannot create links between objects.
- Tag (Outward-facing): Provides better association but involves cumbersome operations (creating a concept requires two steps: 1.create a object. 2.create a tag.) and can lead to tag explosion, making management difficult.
- Object Select (Direct Association): Delivers the best information association and querying performance, allows easy renaming, and is ideal for scenarios with numerous types. Despite these strengths, it has two critical shortcomings:
- Lack of color customization, making visual differentiation between options challenging.
- When changing an object's type, all existing property associations are lost, forcing manual re-linking, which is extremely time-consuming.
Specific Feature Requests:
- Add Color Customization for "Object Select" Property Options
- Allow users to assign specific colors to different object options within the dropdown menu.
- This would enable quick visual identification and significantly improve usability.
- Implement an Intelligent Remapping Mechanism for Object Type Changes
- When a user modifies the type of an "Object Select" property, the system should present an interface to guide the user in mapping the old options to new available ones.
- This functionality could mirror the existing, well-designed remapping feature used when changing an object's type for its properties. The goal is to prevent users from having to manually re-establish associations across large datasets, saving considerable time.
Expected Benefits:
These enhancements would make "Object Select" the most comprehensive and user-friendly dropdown solution. It would retain its powerful, direct association capabilities while addressing the pain points of visual management and data migration, better serving complex information organization needs.
