Improved math experience / Math 2.0

I use math a lot in my notes, and I found several aspects of the current approach that could be improved:

• Currently, opening a math environment opens a small popup. Editing something in a popup does not register in the undo/redo stack, and hence is not affected by Ctrl+z
• there is no syntax highlighting in the latex code, making it hard to navigate visually.
• clicking on a math expression to edit it does not bring you near the symbol you clicked in the code, forcing you to scan the Tex code for it (an issue with long math)

This is not the only option, but perhaps being able to edit the Tex code directly online (rather than a popup) would help? Math code could hide between dollar signs $...$, replaced by its katex render, and when the cursor goes into this region, expand to reveal the color-highlighted Tex code. This could ease navigation with the keyboard
