Can we increase priority for this? Its been great to see all the recent attention on AI and the API etc but there are some basics that would go a long way to having a better experience.

Configurable Heading styles (object wide and the ability to override for individual objects) would be great.

Distinct colors for each heading level create a stronger visual hierarchy, so it becomes much easier to see the structure of a long note at a glance and jump to the right section. This is especially useful on dense, knowledge-heavy pages.

Color-coding heading levels can help users remember where information lives (for example, “blue H2 sections are concepts, green H3 sections are examples”), reinforcing spatial and semantic memory.

When color and size both signal hierarchy, the brain has redundant cues, which reduces the effort needed to keep track of where you are in the document, especially for neurodivergent users or when revisiting complex notes.

Possible implementation ideas:

  • Add a “Heading styles” section under Settings > Editor, allowing users to define a color for each heading level (H1–H4), possibly separately for light and dark mode.
  • Optionally allow per-space or per-object-type overrides, so that certain knowledge spaces (e.g., “Reading Notes” vs. “Projects”) can use different heading color schemes, similar to how types and labels already support custom colors.
  • Ensure the Table of Contents sidebar mirrors the heading colors to maintain consistency and strengthen the connection between content and outline.

I think a good idea would be to give the option to set the default color for each heading. By default it will be the basic text color, but in the appearance settings have the color picker available for each type like

  • Heading 1
  • Heading 2
  • Heading 3
  • Heading 4
  • Bold
  • Italic

The idea is that it utilizes the color picker that already exists to change colors. You just have the option to select the color that each formatting option defaults to.

I'll add that not necessarily color differentiation, but a way to know what heading each thing is without having to click into the block, right click then view the heading type.

Color is a great idea but I see the potential problem of people not liking whatever colors are selected. I know that 'wrong' color choices can really mess up someone's workflow. The potential solution being a setting to let people choose what colors they want for each heading type.
