Whiteboard / Mindmap / Canvas / Drawing

The ability to connect multiple entities on a whiteboard and add free text. The whiteboard itself is also an entity and has it's own database. A good implementation is Heptabase.

+1. A canvas where existing objects (people, books, meetings) can be placed and connected would fit Capacities' object model really well, better than a generic drawing tool. Even a read-only "map view" of an object's links laid out spatially would be a great first step. Handwriting support for tablet users could come later. For bigger collaborative boards I use Novastart, our infinite canvas, but I'd love lightweight visual thinking built right into Capacities.

It is extremely frustrating that such a useful and highly requested feature is simply being ignored by the developers.

The post dates back to 2022, and so far, we haven't received any word on whether this feature will be introduced.

We have also seen alternatives that could facilitate this implementation process, such as integrations.

Please give us an answer regarding this feature.

The Canvas from Obsidian is soo good. I would love to see it in Capacities!

I'm so desperate at this point I wanna cry.... I have to download Capacities backup everyday and open it with Obsidian to work with my notes on canvas. And then figure out what edits I made to the notes to bring them back to capacities. It's a nightmare! You could do the same as Sublime: they integrated tldraw boards and just added a feature where we can place sublime notes on the boards. This is more than enough

We need an AI Mind Map feature to complete student note-taking. I am looking for Capacities to intelligently build interactive /mindmaps.

I would be happy with some kind of integration with an app like Margin Note 4, Mind Manager, or Mindnode.

I see that this is a very popular request. However, none of these features are currently in https://capacities.io/whats-next

One app that does everything you want would be nice, but that is often not the case. So for now, besides just using another app, like Obsidian (which Capacities can import from), or Heptabase, another alternative would be a dual system using Capacities and the competitor with the desired feature(s).

Capacities is working on its API, which means more possibilities for integration, including that with an app with these requested features. See https://feedback.capacities.io/b/1v35e680/feature-ideas/integration-with-excalidraw

Also, improvements and additions could be made to the graph view, perhaps integrating with the query feature.

A good reference would be Noteey and Scrintal.

Excalidraw would be perfect for this. Open Source as well.

Please, this is exactly whats missing!

Please add this, currently every project of mine has an associated xmind logic chart, and every change i think of and add to capacities i have to change in xmind and vice versa.

Doing this will milk all the users from heptabase towards you because capacities is also object based. Please, please, please make this happen!

This is something that would be so good !

Capacities has a wonderful block system that allows user to create nested outline even including other notes in the bullet list.

But this is not nearly as effective as a canvas/whiteboard/mindmap board for visual thinkers.

Mermaidjs is now supported, and such a board is no longer on the what's not next so I'm now hyped up for this and hope it comes soon !

This is the one thing that means I have to keep using a different app for annotating pdfs, handwriting notes, and drawing on top of images. Even if it wasn't supported natively in Capacities, but we could link to other apps, or sync with files in other apps.

This would be great.

Capacities has a pretty good creative philosophy but puts important tools on the the back burner.backburner. Simply put, humans drew long before they wrote, and possibly before they had a complex language. Prioritize visual thinking whenever possible with drawing tools (go for it, give us a pressure sensitive pencil), whiteboards, endless canvas, drag and drop capabilities for objects between graphic and word spaces. Visit a few caves and look up at the walls. It's all there.

Maybe a first iteration could just be more properties visibility in the graph view? It is basically a mindmap, we are just able to only see the title.

Any ETA on this? Stopped using Capacities because of that

Why not just buy the Muse app (Apple iOS). And integrate. It’s functionality is exactly what is needed to provide this capability.

I think this feature can be a huge improvement. In fact, I miss this feature from obsidian

Since you only mentioned it in the title, I'd like to point out that I really miss a drawing feature.

It's a good thing they've implemented mermaid, but sometimes I need to annotate things/drawings freely. And oftentimes graphs are just easier to draw. At the moment I need to import things like sketches or hand-drawn graphs and if there are any edits I need to repeat that step.

Whiteboard Objects should be able to be transferred to different Workspaces.

- Wire Frames feature automatically generates preview images of website pages, PDFs, graphic files, or Card objects. Then make it easy to arrange and connect these images (line shapes) using an enhanced org-chart-style “snap to” function. Why would we use this feature? To create a wireframe presentation page. This could save countless hours in producing data architecture maps and in product/project management.

A whiteboard with Wireframes can be object-oriented. It could also be beneficial for creative writers and video production storytellers.

Whiteboard drawing with support for Apple Pencil.

This would be an amazing feature on iPad and iPad mini for outside salespeople, Home Contractors, etc.

The Whiteboard coding could serve as the foundation for eventually releasing a MindMap.

To keep the Capacities application size small, is it possible to disable a feature (Whiteboard) so it doesn't load at the next application launch?

I totally agree with the idea of a canvas or mind map feature. Just thinking that for some users a work around might be to link objects and then use the graph view.

Any news on this one Admin?

Totally agree. Even though you can reference different information into a simple list... it feels humanly different to just scatter those informations and then sort them all out into a logical visualization.

Lists are forgetable, because they keep the same shape.

Mind-maps, however, allow us to... construct a shape that endures in our memory somehow.

That's often claimed by Heptabase users and Obsidian users. One of them is my teacher that recomends Capacities for people that are starting at PKM, but prefers using Heptabase because... his ideas are more connected into the canvas.

Throughout the years I've been extremely satisfied with Capacities improvements, as the team's compromise to maintain thier philosophy of "a tool that just works". And that's why I, and other 1.8k, believe that this is a vital feature to be considered into this revolutionary space of Personal Knowledgement.

Just a few days ago, I copied various story-related ideas—which were originally scattered throughout Cap and difficult to integrate—into an Obsidian Canvas. By rethinking them from a different perspective, I successfully gained new insights and solved the integration problem.

I believe visualization is a crucial feature. It helps users think about things from a completely different angle, something that traditional bullet-point notes struggle to achieve. If Cap could implement whiteboard-related features in the future, the user experience would be elevated to an entirely new level, and users would no longer need to switch back and forth or copy data between Heptabase or Obsidian and Cap.
